Winelands
Winelands - Cape Town

In 1652 the Dutch East India company establishment a refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope aiming to provide fresh food to the company's fleet on voyages to India and surrounding areas. When the first settlers arrived, Governor Simon van der Stel awarded them land where they could farm for their own needs. When more and more settlers from Germany, France and the Netherlands arrived - some of them experienced winemakers - they discovered that the hills in this region were ideal for growing vines.

The Cape Winelands are easily accessible from Cape Town. Most of the major vineyards are centred around Stellenosch and Franschoek. All the vineyards are open during the week and Saturdays and a select few are open on Sundays. Many of the premier estates also have excellent restaurants to complement their wines.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch (founded in 1679) is about 50km east of Cape Town and is the second oldest town in South Africa. It was named (like Simon's Town) after the former Governer Simon van der Stel. The city is situated on the banks of the Eerste River ('First River'). It's home to one of the country's most established universities with over 25000 students and offers some fine examples of Cape-Dutch architecture. It is also known as 'Eikestad' (Oak city) because of its oak tree lined streets. Wines from Stellenbosch are known internationally and rank among the best in the world.

Franschhoek

They found it in the fertile valley of Franschhoek - initially known as Oliphantshoek, as they valley was known for its large numbers of elephants.
Even though most people don't speak French, many of the street names, restaurant names and wine farms in the 'French Quarter' have French names.
Franschhoek makes a serious attempt at being the food and wine capital of South Africa and there are many fine restaurants. It's a great place to relax, enjoy top food and wine, in a spectacular atmosphere.

You can walk along the main street to have a look at the shops and various restaurants and a stroll through the streets off the main street will show you some nice old houses.
