There is no written history before 1488 on Cape Town. The first mention was by Bartholomeu Dias the famous Portuguese explorer but they merely passed by to East Africa. It was only in 1652 that the Dutch East India Company settled here. The Company Gardens in the city centre is where the first Dutch settlement was.
