Day 1: Cape Town - Oudtshoorn, 420 km

We depart from Cape Town and take a picturesque drive towards Paarl, crossing the impressive Du Toitskloof pass. The route is well-known for its natural beauty consisting of majestic mountains, a rich diversity in plant life and excellent wines. Today we are travelling through the Klein Karoo. Klein meaning “small” and Karoo is and old KhoiSan word meaning “Land of thirst”. We travel on Route62, known as the longest wine route in the world!
We also cross the beautiful Huisrivier pass with its magnificent geological rock formations that leads us into Calitzdorp, well known as the port capital of South Africa. We stop at Boplaas wine estate for port and wine tasting. A short drive brings you to the feather capital of the world, Oudtshoorn, where we will spend the night.

Day 2: Oudsthoorn and surrounds 60km

We will be spending the day around the Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, which is situated between the spectacular Swartberg and Outeniqua passes. We visit one of the many ostrich show farms in the area and learn about this fascinating bird, which played such a big economic role in this town. The tranquil Schoemanshoek Valley leads us to the world renowned Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn oldest and most popular attraction.

To date three systems of limestone caverns have been discovered and a part of these magical caves will be explored by us! We end our day with a late-afternoon drive up the Swartberg pass, with its soaring cliff walls and rock formations, a truly spectacular world heritage site!

Day 3: Oudtshoorn - Knysna 150km

This morning you have time to explore Oudtshoorn a little further, either participating in one of the many optional activities or a bit of free time in this town with its numerous museums, interesting architectural relics and National monuments. The road from Oudtshoorn towards the Garden Route leads us to the spectacular Outeniqua pass!

After a brief photo stop we travel through George and the winding Kaaimans pass, towards the beautiful coastal town of Wilderness, which is well known for its un-spoilt sandy beaches. We head for one of South Africa’s favourite towns, Knysna, where you have a bit of time to explore the waterfront and optional oyster tasting, before heading to our accommodation. We end the day with a relaxing, late-afternoon sunset boat-cruise on the Knysna estuary.

Day 4: Knysna - Stormsriver 100km

The lush vegetation, mountains, lagoons, rivers, beaches and sea combine to make the Garden Route a visual treat. We leave Knysna and travel further along the coast, passing pretty coastal towns and picturesque estuaries. On the other side of Plettenberg Bay the Bloukrans Bridge crosses a deep ravine, which is the site of the world’s highest bungy, a full 216m in height. We stop at the viewpoint for a look at this spectacular site, and an optional bungy jump.

Another 20km brings us to one of South Africa’s national parks, Tsitsikamma National Park. Tsitsikamma means “place of the sparkling waters”. With its rugged coast, thriving indigenous forest, panoramic views and abundance of fresh water from streams, this park is a paradise to visitors. We spend the afternoon in the park, which gives you ample time for different hiking trails and taking pictures, or just relaxing at the restaurant with its views over the sea. After a short drive we arrive in the beautiful village of Stormsriver, surrounded by thriving vegetation and indigenous forests. A short walk in the forest brings us to a massive Yellow wood tree, one of the best examples of South Africa’s National Tree.

Day 5: Stormsriver – Mossel Bay 150km

After a hearty breakfast we take a short drive to the impressive Stormsriver bridge. You will have the chance of crossing this 140m high bridge by foot. Stunning panoramic views down the deeply cut valley makes for beautiful photographs and an adventurous start to your morning.

The bridge forms the border of the Garden Route and also means our turning point. We take a drive towards Mossel Bay where the very interesting Diaz Museum will be visited. The afternoon, an exciting game drive will be done in Botlierskop Private Game Reserve outside Mossel Bay.

Day 6: Mossel Bay – Hermanus 320km

A relatively early departure will take us on the N2 highway towards Albertinia where we will make a brief stop to learn about the Aloe Vera industry and see some of the products that are made from the plant that grows here in abundance. We keep travelling on this road and enter Riversdal and the famous “sleeping beauty” lies watching over this farming town. The next town is Swellendam (the third oldest in the country) with its beautiful Cape Dutch style buildings and its rich history.

Passing the town of Riviersonderend we take the turn-off towards Hermanus, the world’s best site for land-based whale watching. You have the adventurous option of going in search of the Southern Right whales by boat or go for some wine tasting in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde valley (meaning – “Heaven and Earth”). Hermanus itself offers some beautiful coastal walks as well as stunning sandy beaches! We overnight in Hermanus.

Day 7: Hermanus – Cape Town 150km

Today is a day of extreme beauty and lots of great stops. After a short travel we take the coastal route towards the holiday town of Kleinmond. Outside Kleinmond we visit the Harold Porter Nature Reserve and learn about the rich flora of this area, the Cape floral kingdom is known as the richest plant Kingdom in the World!

Some beautiful waterfalls can also be found inside the park. An optional picnic can be organized here before we travel further to the coastal village of Pringle Bay. From here the route will take you into an area with majestic mountains on one side and the sea on the other (Clarens drive). Another short drive and we will be back in “The beautiful Mother City”, Cape Town, where we have come to the end of our terrific tour!
